  1. Pain is a subjective experience with two complementary aspects: one is a localized sensation in a particular body part; the other is an unpleasant quality of varying severity commonly associated with behaviors directed at relieving or terminating the experience.

  2. 24 Ιουλ 2023 · Nociceptive signal transduction to the brain is what elicits the perception of pain. The complex biopsychosocial phenomenon of pain occurs in the cortical and subcortical regions, such as the thalamus, amygdala, hypothalamus, periaqueductal grey, basal ganglia and areas of the cerebral cortex.

  3. We will discuss pain receptors, transmission of pain signals to the spinal cord and pain pathways within the spinal cord. We will also look at how pain can be modulated at different levels along the pathway. Finally we discuss different types of pain including visceral and neuropathic pain.

  4. Nociception, the initial processing of pain, involves a system of mechanisms that en-code and transmit the pain signal, along the ascending pathway, from the point of nox-ious stimulation in the periphery to higher. Figure 1. Ascending pain pathway.

  5. Pain is transmitted by primary afferents, which have their cell bodies in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG). They terminate in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. The dorsal horn cells are divided into specific regions or laminae called Rexed’s laminae with lamina I being the most superficial. 9

  6. 1 Αυγ 2014 · This article provides an integrated review of the basic anatomy and physiology of the pain processing pathways. The transmission and parcellation of noxious stimuli from the peripheral nervous system to the central nervous system is discussed.

  7. 1 Νοε 2021 · Pain can be anatomically and phenomenologically dissected into three separable but interacting pathways, a lateral ‘painfulness’ pathway, a medial ‘suffering’ pathway and a descending pain inhibitory pathway. In chronic pain the descending pain inhibitory pathway is less activated.
