Calculate the total daily amount of food the dog should be fed. Give the first meal (two-thirds of the daily amount) prior to the morning Vetsulin injection. This allows the owner to confirm the dog is feeling well and eating normally before administering the insulin.

There are several situations when a BGC should be performed: (1) after the first dose of a new kind of insulin; (2) at 7 –14 days after an insulin dose change; (3) at least q 3 mo even in well-controlled diabetics; (4) any time clinical signs recur in a controlled patient; and. (5) when hypoglycemia is suspected.
As well as dietary management, all diabetic dogs also require daily injections of insulin. Your vet will take you through this and show you how to do it – but it’s easier than most people think. To achieve best control of blood glucose, dogs should be fed the same type and amount of food every day.
Prescription diets, available through your veterinarian, use ingredients to even out blood glucose levels, making it easier to keep your dog on a steady dose of insulin. They also must limit fat intake to prevent complications, such as pancreatitis.

So, let’s say your dog’s weight is 30 lbs., then: 30×1/4=7.5. Your dog would need 7.5 units of insulin. If your dog has a weight of 52lbs., then: 52 × ¼ =13.
The ideal diet for a patient with diabetes should contain restricted fat, increased complex carbohydrates, and increased fiber and should be chosen to suit both the owner and the dog. There are a number of prescription diets that have been specially formulated for the management of diabetes.
