The Depth Meter is one of the three parts necessary to make the GPS, with the others being the Compass and the Gold Watch or Platinum Watch, and as such is a required ingredient in crafting the Shellphone (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
The Depth Meter is an informational accessory that displays the player's depth. It is required to craft the GPS, which can then be used to craft the PDA and the Cell Phone. The Depth Meter is dropped by Cave Bats, Giant Bats, Jungle Bats, Spore Bats, and Ice Bats, with a chance of 1/100 (1%) / 1/200 (0.5%) .
The following items now craft into each other while at a Tinkerer's Workshop in Ecto Mist: Brain of Confusion and Worm Scarf. Crimson Heart and Shadow Orb. DPS Meter can now be crafted with 10 Wire and 5 Any Gold Bars at an Anvil. Each set piece of the Shroomite armor set and Spectre armor set alternative recipes now use 1 Living Shard.

Crafting. The Depth Meter is an accessory that tells the player how far above or below your character is from the surface level. The surface level is defined as the point where the background wall changes. It will display "feet above", "feet below", or "level" as relation to the biome change horizon between The Underground and the Forest.
Depth can be determined via a Depth Meter or any of its derivative accessories: On the Desktop version, Console version, and Mobile version, depth is measured in feet, with one tile equaling two feet. On the Old-gen console version, depth is measured in meters, with two tiles equaling one meter.
The Depths was a mod started back in June of 2015 by Snickerbobble. Since then nothing has really happened regarding the original Depths, but many attempts to remake it for tModloader have failed. Hopefully this attempt won't fail and will be the new depths.
