Alopecia areata (AA) is a common form of non-scarring alopecia characterized by acute hair loss in the absence of cutaneous inflammatory signs. The disease usually starts abruptly with one or multiple patches that enlarge in a centrifugal way. The entire scalp (AA totalis) and body (AA universalis) may be affected.
