To collect a sample from a dog, walk the dog on-leash outside. Confirm that the feces sample to be collected is fresh and not old. Collect the sample with a plastic spoon or, if the feces is firm, use the inverted plastic bag approach, as described above.
To perform a fecal test for dogs, veterinarians require a fresh stool sample from the dog, ideally less than 24 hours old and free of grass or dirt. The sample is mixed with a special liquid to dissolve and separate the stool, causing any parasite eggs to float to the surface.
