Just as everyone handles money differently, you can format money differently depending on the amount and the nature of your text. Here are some basic guidelines for writing about money in general content. These guidelines are based on The Chicago Manual of Style (Chicago style) and The Associated Press Stylebook (AP style).

Casual, isolated references, as well as approximations, are generally spelled out, as in the examples below: “I’m just putting in my two cents’ worth.” “Remember when a candy bar cost twenty-five cents?”
27 Οκτ 2022 · Money amounts are usually written as numerals, but can be written out when the amount is vague or rounded up — "it cost two or three dollars." The most important guidelines to keep in mind are: Currency symbols should be placed before the number, with no spaces.
What's the best way to write dollar amounts in a narrative (such as a novel), particularly if the amounts are large and/or fractional? I would use this: "The national debt just hit 14.6 trillion dollars ," said Jack, "yet you complain about my $2 million fee and $5,000 airline tickets?"
Rule 1. Spell out all numbers beginning a sentence. Examples: Twenty-three hundred sixty-one victims were hospitalized. Twenty twenty was quite a year. Note: The Associated Press Stylebook makes an exception for years. Example: 2020 was quite a year. Rule 2a. Hyphenate all compound numbers from twenty-one through ninety-nine. Examples:
15 Αυγ 2011 · The simplest way to express large numbers is best. Round numbers are usually spelled out. Be careful to be consistent within a sentence. It goes on to give the following examples which are all considered correct: You can earn from one million to five million dollars. You can earn from five hundred to five million dollars.
21 Μαΐ 2011 · It's probably best to either use the appropriate sigil (e.g. $) or the ISO currency code (e.g. USD) as a prefix, rather than mixing them. Alternatively, use the sigil, and follow the quantity with a country specifier (e.g. $10 US, $14 CA or $14 Canadian).
