In this review article, we will discuss the clinical management of adult AIH patients and its latest developments, based on recent literature. Our aim is to assist the general gastroenterologist and hepatologist in the management of AIH, once an AIH diagnosis has been confirmed.
Progression to advanced hepatic fibrosis, cirrhosis, death from liver failure, or LT are possible outcomes. Treatment with immunosuppressive agents has been life-saving, but management regimens may be long-term, associated with serious side effects, and variably effective.
