Hydroponic growing systems are actively being explored as a solution for growing fresh fruits and vegetables in densely populated urban areas, in water insecure deserts, and even as a way to help increase home food production.
Exploring Hydroponics includes basic how-to information for growing plants hydroponically in your classroom; lesson plans to help students learn through hands-on investigations; construction plans for simple hydroponic setups; and additional reference materials to support your endeavors.
When students grow plants hydroponically, they begin to investigate plant needs through a different lens and have the chance to develop a deep understanding about the conditions required for healthy plant growth and development.
Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to identify five elements plants need to grow and thrive. Students will be able to describe how water is used to provide the right balance of nutrients to the plants’ roots. Students will be able to name two advantages of using hydroponics to produce food.

Students set up one or more hydroponic systems and collect data for a four week period to determine which system resulted in the best plant growth. Students learn about the role of different environmental factors on plants grown in the absence of soil. Such factors include pH, light, and aeration.
