Faith fixes on the Divine revelation, and assents thereto, relying on the Divine Redeemer. Hope fastens on future happiness, and waits for that; but in heaven, faith will be swallowed up in actual sight, and hope in enjoyment. There is no room to believe and hope, when we see and enjoy.
What does 1 Corinthians 13:9 mean? Paul is showing that for believers to treat each other with self-sacrificing, Christ-like love is far superior than the exercise of spiritual gifts. He has just written that another way it is superior is that love is an eternal act.
In 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 Paul has three final things to say of this Christian love. (i) He stresses its absolute permanency. When all the things in which men glory have passed away love will still stand.
Verse 9. - We know in part. The expression applies directly to religious knowledge, and should be a rebuke to the pretence to infallibility and completeness which is sometimes usurped by religious men.
