The 'Iao Needle is a large rock spire that towers high above the 'Iao Valley in the middle of the west Maui mountains. This is one of the most popular trails in central Maui and can get crowded, but the views and scenery are well worth the visit.

1 Μαΐ 2023 · Download our Hawaii Map Packet. Nestled in the lush greenery of the 'Iao Valley is the natural rock formation called the 'Iao Needle. The green-covered stone protruding from the valley floor is actually an old basaltic core (volcano remnant).
A paved walking trail provides a scenic viewpoint of Kuka’emoku (‘Iao Needle), an erosional feature which rises 1200 feet from the valley floor. A short paved loop trail meanders though an ethnobotanical garden adjacent to ‘Iao stream.
Covered in the lush vegetation of the rainforest, ‘Iao Needle is a remarkable sight from the lookout post, and still pretty impressive from the parking lot. However, if you visit on a really damp day, you might find that even this impressive structure can be hidden in a veil of cloud.
Those famous views of the West Maui mountains are from hiking up the relatively short Iao Needle Lookout Trail that is a part of what’s officially called the Iao Valley State Monument. This is one of the Hawaii state parks on Maui that come with amazing views!
