The 'Iao Needle Lookout Trail at 'Iao Valley State Monument in Wailuku, Maui is a moderate 0.7 mile out-and-back hike through a short paved path that leads along the 'Iao Stream and Kinihapai Stream with lookout points higher up near the end of the trail with views of the 'Iao Needle.
A paved walking trail provides a scenic viewpoint of Kuka’emoku (‘Iao Needle), an erosional feature which rises 1200 feet from the valley floor. A short paved loop trail meanders though an ethnobotanical garden adjacent to ‘Iao stream.
Those famous views of the West Maui mountains are from hiking up the relatively short Iao Needle Lookout Trail that is a part of what’s officially called the Iao Valley State Monument. This is one of the Hawaii state parks on Maui that come with amazing views!
There is a labyrinth of winding paved paths that wander through the lush vegetation, flirting with the ‘Iao Stream which winds below the famed spired needle. It’s a gently challenging 133 steps up to the lookout for your reward – a magnificent 360 degree view of Maui!
