This natural paradise was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1986 before acquiring National Park status in 1989. Moreover, it has the highest peak in the Iberian Peninsula, Mulhacén, with an altitude of 11,414 ft, and the iconic Alpujarra, which is known for its white villages lining the mountain slopes.
The Iberian Highlands is a vast forest landscape already protected by two large natural parks and many Natura 2000 sites. The area lies in the middle of the so-called ‘Empty Spain’, with very low human population density and depopulation.
