California's official state fish is the California golden trout. California has three distinct subspecies of rainbow trout commonly grouped as golden trout: Kern River rainbow trout, Little Kern golden trout, and California golden trout.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife uses the term “heritage trout” to describe native trout that have existed in California since prehistoric times. To be considered a “heritage trout” it must be found in its historic watershed.
Apache Trout. The Apache is one of Arizona’s two native trout species and is the Arizona state fish. Body color is yellowish-gold at the top of the head and the back is a dark olive. Dorsal, anal and pelvic fins are white tipped with dark, bold spots on dorsal and tail fin.
Rainbow trout, brown trout, and brook trout are the primary trout species found in Arizona's waters. Each species has its own unique characteristics and habitat preferences, providing anglers with diverse fishing opportunities.
