The Chumash are a Native American people of the central and southern coastal regions of California, in portions of what is now Kern, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, extending from Morro Bay in the north to Malibu in the south to Mt Pinos in the east.
History — Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. The Chumash people once numbered in the tens of thousands and lived along the coasts of California. Through centuries of hardships and abuse, the tribe has overcome all odds in order to thrive on the land of our Chumash ancestors once more.
The Chumash People. The Chumash Indian* homeland lies along the coast of California, between Malibu and Paso Robles, as well as on the Northern Channel Islands. Before the Mission Period, the Chumash lived in 150 independent towns and villages with a total population of at least 25,000 people.
