  3. 1.1 Introduction. Amount (numbers), organization, space, and change are all studied in mathematics. Mathematicians and philosophers have differing perspectives on the scope and definition of mathematics. Investing in children’s teaching reflects a nation’s sense of modernity and progress.

  4. Active Learning. Organizations such as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM, 2014) have long advocated the use of teaching strategies that require cognitive engagement in the construction of new knowledge, highlighting in particular the importance of problem solving in mathematics.

  5. There are three critical components to effective mathematics instruction (Shellard & Moyer, 2002): Teaching for conceptual understanding. Developing children’s procedural literacy. Promoting strategic competence through meaningful problem-solving investigations.

  6. Students are taught how to: identify scenarios; evaluate; select problem-solving strategies; identify possible conclusions; select logical conclusions; describe how a solution was summarized; and indicate how those solutions can be applied to more advanced math problems.
