Internal transfer describes the process of a currently enrolled undergraduate student at UT Austin moving from one college to another or moving within the Cockrell School of Engineering from one major to another.
If an external transfer student accepts an offer to a different major at UT Austin with the intent of switching into the Cockrell School, they will need to meet internal transfer requirements and apply through a competitive application process.
If you are a current student at UT Austin and are interested in changing your major, you may be able to apply for internal transfer. The internal transfer process is competitive and some majors only offer internal transfer for fall admission.
You won’t be considered an internal transfer until you complete in residence hours at UT. So for cockrell that includes calculus and other technical courses. At this point, apply as an external transfer.
ECE is probably the most competitive Cockrell major to transfer into, and it has one of the strictest 4-year pre-req chains, you begin taking ECE specific classes starting in first semester of freshman year.
Transferring into cockrell is generally very hard. If you think it's worth trying, make sure you get involved in ME stuff early. Extracurriculars, personal projects, take some classes as electives.

Cockrell has separate eligibility criteria whether you’re a current engineering student or outside of the Cockrell school. Non-engineers can internally transfer only in the fall.
