This document describes how to install Linux on your iPod using a Unix-like system (for example Linux or Mac OSX). The process is based on the 2.4.24-ipod0 release of the Linux kernel and the 040403 release of the root filesystem.

What we are going to be doing is installing the latest version of podzilla ( http://ipodlinux.org/Podzilla) and its kernel onto the iPod.
In order to install Linux on your iPod you first need to make sure your system is configured to connect to your iPod. If you are using Mac OS X, it is most likely already configured. If you are using Windows, make sure iTunes lets your iPod show up as a disk drive in My Computer.
Currently music playback is limited (mp3 only, ogg coming soon), but you can browse the file system, leech files from other devices (including other ipods), use ip over firewire to telnet into your ipod, and write software for it using the Podzilla Tool Kit (PTK) - a work in progress.
This page provides the details of an open source venture into porting Linux onto the iPod. So far, we have successfully ported a customized uClinux kernel to the iPod, and written a simple user interface for it dubbed podzilla .
