29 Φεβ 2016 · When people are asked to recall a list of items, their performance is usually worse when the presentation of the list is accompanied by irrelevant speech. The speech does not need to be in a language that the participant knows, and doesn't even have to be real speech.
The irrelevant speech effect is the finding that performance on serial recall tasks is impaired by the presence of irrelevant background speech.
The irrelevant speech effect (ISE) or irrelevant sound effect is the degradation of serial recall of a list when sounds, especially speech sounds, are presented. This occurs even if the list items are presented visually.
