26 Ιαν 2021 · Low albumin levels may indicate malnutrition, chronic liver disease, or inflammatory disease. The half-life of albumin is approximately three weeks. When liver function is impaired over a prolonged period, albumin synthesis is also impaired, which results in low levels of albumin.
Key point. In patients with decompensated cirrhosis, circulating albumin is low; moreover, albumin is damaged and dysfunctional. In this perspective, exogenous HA infusions would aim at restoring the major physiological functions of the molecule by increasing the effective albumin concentration.
26 Φεβ 2020 · Albumin is currently employed as a plasma expander to prevent and treat specific complications of cirrhosis with ascites, such as the prevention of paracentesis-induced circulatory dysfunction and renal dysfunction induced by spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of acute kidney injury and hepatorenal syndrome.
Low serum albumin is common in cirrhosis and is associated with a reduced survival. Moreover, in this setting, the native isoform of albumin can be severely reduced due to several posttranscriptional changes that impair the non-oncotic properties of the molecule.
