I know I'm gonna get downvoted for saying this, but the answer is that "being bad" and "getting things right" are ultimately subjective. The creative team behind the movie probably just had a different idea of what a good Death Note adaptation looked like compared to the broader Death Note fandom.

Adam Wingard has never made a good movie in his entire career, he doesn’t know how to. I enjoy this movie because of how bad it is, but make no mistake, it is absolutely, fundamentally, objectively a bad movie.
No, It's awful. Don't waste your time. Lmao it's really not worth your time. Even if the creators of the series approved the Netflix adaptation, it was still horrible even if one tried to consider it a standalone movie because of the major plot holes and weak/uninteresting character writing.
