Intravenous iron is widely used for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia when oral iron is inappropriate, ineffective or poorly tolerated. Acute hypersensitivity reactions during iron infusions are very rare but can be life-threatening.
Potential treatments for iron-deficiency anemia include oral or intravenous (IV) iron formulations. The IV iron formulations that are currently available in the United States include iron sucrose, low-molecular-weight iron dextran, ferrous gluconate, ferric carboxymaltose, iron isomaltoside, and ferumoxytol.
8 Φεβ 2012 · This review summarises clinical consequences of iron deficiency (ID) and anaemia in cancer patients, mechanisms how impaired iron homeostasis affects diagnosis and treatment of ID, and data from clinical trials evaluating i.v. iron with or without concomitant erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs).
In controlled clinical trials investigating iron supplementation in ESA-treated anaemic cancer patients, i.v. iron supplementation (total doses in the range of 1000 mg of iron) significantly improved the haematological response to ESA treatment versus ESA alone .
Abstract. Introduction: Numerous clinical trials affirm the efficacy and safety of IV iron to treat cancer-related anemia (CRA). Nonetheless, evaluation and treatment of CRA remains suboptimal. Areas covered: This review summarizes CRA therapy with a focus on iron deficiency and its treatment.
4 Φεβ 2016 · Erythropoiesis‐stimulating agents (ESAs) are commonly used to treat chemotherapy‐induced anemia (CIA). However, about half of patients do not benefit. Objectives. To evaluate the benefits and harms related to the use of iron as a supplement to ESA and iron alone compared with ESA alone in the management of CIA. Search methods.
15 Νοε 2022 · Intravenous (IV) iron infusions are associated with a variety of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) including anaphylactic reactions. The Commonly used IV iron formulations are Iron sucrose (Venofer), Ferric carboxymaltose (Injectafer), Sodium ferric gluconate complex (Ferrlecit), and others.
