According to Thomson’s atomic model, an atom is made up of a positively charged sphere into which negatively charged electrons are implanted. Because electrons and protons have the same magnitude, an atom as a whole is electrically neutral.

His nonmathematical atomic theory—unlike early quantum theory—could also be used to account for chemical bonding and molecular structure (see Gilbert Newton Lewis and Irving Langmuir). In 1913 Thomson published an influential monograph urging chemists to use the mass spectrograph in their analyses.
It was first proposed by J. J. Thomson in 1904 following his discovery of the electron in 1897, and was rendered obsolete by Ernest Rutherford 's discovery of the atomic nucleus in 1911. The model tried to account for two properties of atoms then known: that there are electrons, and that atoms have no net electric charge.
