The Nanchang J-12 (Chinese: 歼-12) was a lightweight supersonic fighter built by the People's Republic of China, intended for use by the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).
One of the earliest modern indigenous jet fighters it was designated Jianjiji-12 (J-12, Fighter-12), and powered by a single 7,165 lb (3,250 kg) st Wopen WP-6 turbojet (Chinese-built Tumansky RD-9BF-811) the first of three prototypes made its flight on December 26, 1970.
The Nanchang J-12, a lightweight supersonic fighter prototype, was developed by the Nanchang Aircraft Manufacturing Company (NAMC) and first flew in 1970. It featured a single WP-6Z turbojet engine, producing 9,000lb of thrust with afterburner, enabling speeds up to 808 mph.
