8 Φεβ 2011 · I just bought a 99 30 HP mercury oil injected 2 stroke. While I was installing it, one of the island kibitzers said I should immediately dismantle the oil injection system and mix the oil by hand because the oil injection system was unreliable, and you never could tell if it was working.
2 Φεβ 2007 · I have a 90 hp Merc 2 stk with the oil injection. It has an oil fill cap on the top of the motor. Basically, the gasket cap isn't adequate and oil leaks badly when I tilt the motor up and trailer the boat.

Among the Equinox forums it seems the vented oil cap is desirable to prevent blowing out the crank seal, but would it also cut down on the oil consumption? Just trying to keep it going until we can get rid of it, but a vented cap might be a cheap fix if it helps.

The first thing I want to check is the oil injection and the warning indicator specifically. I've done a good bit of reading on the system and understand it is considered very reliable so we've got that out of the way.
