This volume contains 81 carefully selected Chinese poems arranged in chronological order, from antiquity (c.2000 BCE) to the modern time (1972), though most of them are from the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties, since these two eras were the climax of Chinese poetry creation and development.

Shi jing is a poetic song collection from the pre-Qin period of China. As Confucius edited and arranged the songs, it became one of the six Confucius classics. During the early Western Han (206 BCE-8 CE) there were three different traditions of transmission of the text, called "the three-school poetry."

This performance-based research project surveys Chinese contemporary art song from 1976 to the present, as represented in the work of four composers: Shi Guangnan (1940–1990), Lu Zaiyi (b. 1943), Shang Deyi (b. 1932), and Zheng Qiufeng (b. 1931).
