22 Οκτ 2023 · Hundreds of Japanese death poems, many with a commentary describing the circumstances of the poet's death, have been translated into English here, the vast majority of them for the first time.
These are my modern English translations of jisei or Japanese death poems. Many such poems fall into a category called Zen Death Haiku. However, not all the poems here are haiku: some are tanka or waka.

7 Ιαν 2021 · Jisei were most often written as Japanese-style poetry (waka), with the most popular types being the well-known haiku. They also came in the form of tanka, which follows the 5-7-5-7-7 syllable format, but even that was occasionally challenged.

1 Δεκ 2013 · One of the earliest record of jisei dates to 686 CE with the death of Prince Otsu, a poet and the son of Emperor Temmu, who was forced to commit suicide on false charges of promoting a rebellion. Jisei was written in kanshi, waka, and haiku.
