John 15:3. ἤδη ὑμεῖς καθαροί ἐστε: “Already ye are clean”. καθαροί here means “in a condition fit to bear fruit”; in John 13:10-11, it is suggested by the feet-washing, and means “free from inward stain”. It is similarly used even in classical writers.
John 15:3 speaks to the spiritual cleansing that comes from adhering to the teachings of Jesus Christ. In this verse, Jesus says, “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.” The word ‘clean’ here reflects not physical cleanliness but spiritual purity.
