This is one of six paintings illustrating scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist, a prophet considered a forerunner of Jesus. They were originally part of a group of 12 that possibly formed the doors of a reliquary shrine to the saint.
John the Baptist bursts onto the scene to find the Virgin Mary in adoration of the Baby Jesus in a painting by Lippi inspired by Saint Brigid’s account of the Nativity, (14th century), which was a very popular figurative subject.
The picture is distinguished by an extensive use of rich browns, rapid brushwork which allows the ground to show through in several places and what can only be described as the greatly increased 'classicism' of composition.
The painting is one of a series of six canvases on the life of that saint, four of them by Stanzione: The Birth of John the Baptist announced to Zacharias , The Preaching of Saint John the Baptist , The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Baptist leaving his Father’s House .
