Christ is the image of the Godhead in fullness and exactly represents the full nature of the Godhead to mankind. As such, He is the goal to which man should strive—to be conformed into the image of Christ in fullness so that man would be prepared to take on firstborn status so as to be numbered among a company of many mature sons. b.
In order to illustrate that thesis, this essay will trace the evolution of the image of the cross in the context of early Christian art: the first examples of the cross, the early images of Christ, and the first depictions of Christ on the cross.
If Christians today desire to use these pictures and images of Jesus Christ for any purpose, they are aligning themselves with the Roman Church, and the seventh Ecumenical Council, as well as breaking fellowship with the foundations of Reformation theology.
