You'll lose some analog input---for example, the joysticks will just function as arrow keys that are on or off without the usual range of sensitivity---but for some games, that's not a huge issue.
JoyToKey is a keyboard and mouse emulator for joysticks. It converts joystick input into keyboard input (and mouse input). Use it when you want to control an application with joysticks that doesn't support joystick input.
Gopher is a piece of software for windows that lets you control your mouse and keyboard with a controller. It's free software/open source and very lightweight unlike some other alternatives. It was originally written by one of the mods here: u/Tizaki .
