Most irregular Spanish verbs have an irregular stem as well as a special set of pretérito endings: The stem is hic – and it takes the above endings. But in the 3rd person singular, what would be "hico" becomes hizo, changing c to z to maintain the same pronunciation as in the other conjugations.
