Kentucky River Locks & Dams. The Kentucky River features a series of 14 locks and dams, some operational and some closed, stretching from Carrollton to Beattyville, Kentucky.
A series of lock and dams was constructed along the river between 1836 and 1917 to improve navigability and to expand access southward along the river. The 14 lock and dams extend from Carrollton near the Ohio River to Beattyville in the southeastern part of the state.
Kentucky River, tributary of the Ohio River in north-central Kentucky, U.S., and navigable along its 259-mile (417-km) course by means of locks. It is formed by the confluence of North, Middle, and South forks near Beattyville in Lee county and empties into the Ohio at Carrollton.

The primary importance of the locks today is to maintain a pool that allows the city of Lexington to draw its drinking water from the river. Although the Lexington area receives well over 40 inches (1,000 mm) of precipitation annually, the limestone karst geology of the area allows little natural surface water.
