Leonidas was the king of Sparta who led the Spartan forces at the battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE, in the war between Persia and an alliance of Greek city-states. He attempted to block the Persian invasion of Greece, but he and all his soldiers died.
This study, in three parts, addresses the problem of the beginning of the classical style—the so-called Severe Style—from an archaeological perspective, focusing on those sculptures either found, or allegedly found, in Persian destruction contexts or directly associated with the Persian and Carthaginian invasions.
Leonidas (“Son of a Lion”) and his fellow king Leotychidas (“Luck of a Lion”)—Sparta had two kings and tworoyal families—were the commanders- in-chief of all Greek forces fighting the Persians on land and sea.
Leonidas (540 BC – 480 BC) was a king of the Greek city-state of Sparta. He led theSpartan forces during the Second Persian War, and is remembered for his heroic death at the Battle of Thermopylae. He is resembled in many greek statues.
