The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires states to assess students annually in grades 3-8 and once in high school in English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, and science. Each assessment used for federal accountability must go through Federal Peer Review where a State demonstrates the technical soundness of its assessment system.
Each STC should enter their MCAP MISA testing schedule in the Statewide Schedule Tool at https://itempra.org/schedule. Schedules should be updated as changes occur. The timing and number of Sections for the 2022 MCAP MISA 5&8 will consist of four 40-minute Sections.

The Maryland School Assessment (MSA) is a test of reading and math achievement that meets the testing requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The test is given each year in early March in reading and math at grades 3 through 8. The science test is given in April or early May.

The Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA) is administered to all students in fifth grade, eighth grade, and high school. The MISA is aligned to the Maryland Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The NGSS integrates three dimensions necessary to understand science.
