Work Hour Limitations for Youths. Rules for 14- and 15-year-olds. These youth may be employed: No more than three hours a day when school is in session for the youth and no more than eight hours a day if school is not in session. Only between 7 a.m and 7 p.m. (9 p.m. from June 1 through Labor Day when school is not in session).

These laws prohibit minors from engaging in hazardous occupations, set restrictions on working hours, and define minimum wage rates for employees under 20 years of age and student workers.
Under North Carolina child labor laws, youth must be 14-years-old or older to get a job and work in North Carolina with a few exceptions. North Carolina child labor laws allows 12-year-olds and 13-year-olds to work outside school hours in the delivering newspapers for up to 3 hours each workday.
Youth under the age of 18 who work in North Carolina must have a Youth Employment Certificate. You may contact the N.C. Department of Labor – Wage and Hour Bureau, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. at 1-800-625-2267, if you have questions.
According to North Carolina state law, minors under the age of 16 are prohibited from working during school hours unless they have completed a certificate of parental permission for employment and have obtained a youth employment certificate (work permit) from their school.
