These bacteria originate from the wastes of animals or humans.
Further testing should include the subgroup fecal coliform and its subgroup, Escherichia coli (E. coli). A positive fecal coliform would indicate possible recent sewage or animal waste contamination. E. coli outbreaks related to food contamination have received media attention.
Water samples are collected to measure E. coli (Figure 1) to make sure water is safe for public recreation, such as swimming, fishing or canoeing. E. coli is considered an indicator organism, used to identify fecal contamination in freshwater and indicate the possible presence of disease-causing bacteria and viruses (pathogens).
Water can be tested for E. coli and test results are typically available about 24 hours after samples are collected. Results are expressed as Most Probable Number (mpn) of E. coli per 100 ml of water.
