The Law Enforcement Code of Ethics is a set of guidelines and principles that governs the behavior and conduct of law enforcement officers, emphasizing integrity, fairness, and professionalism in their duties.
Codes of ethics are usually used by law enforcement institutions to set principles, values and standards of ethical and professional behaviours, and to outline requirements, limitations or prohibition on officer conduct and activities within the agency (International Association of Chiefs of Police).
I. PURPOSE. It is the purpose of this policy to provide specificity to the standards of conduct embodied in the law enforcement officer’s code of ethics1 and this agency’s statement of values and mission, so that officers2 have a clear understanding of agency expectations pertaining to conduct and activities while on and off duty.3. II. POLICY.
Specific topics covered will include core values, codes of conduct, ethical dilemmas, organizational consequences, liability, and the importance of critical thinking. By the end of this book, you will be able to distinguish and critically debate contemporary ethical issues in law enforcement.
