Download PDF Copy. Request Quote. By G.P. Thomas Dec 17 2012. Chemical Formula. Lr. Background. Lawrencium was discovered by four American scientists, Robert M. Latimer, Almon E. Larsh, Torbjørn Sikkeland and Albert Ghiorso in 1961 at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in California.
From the Berkeley experiments, 257Lr was found to emit f1642 Fermium, mendelevium, nobelium, and lawrencium alpha particles of 8.8 MeV with a half‐life of only 0.6, but 258Lr was found to have a half‐life of 4.2 s with the emission of 8.62 MeV alpha particles.
Lawrencium is a synthetic chemical element; it has symbol Lr (formerly Lw) and atomic number 103. It is named after Ernest Lawrence, inventor of the cyclotron, a device that was used to discover many artificial radioactive elements.

Download reference work entry PDF. Lawrencium (Lr), atomic number (Z) 103, is the fourteenth, and final, member of the actinide series. Ten isotopes (mass = 252–262) have been synthesized and observed. Lawrencium has no natural abundance; the half-lives range from 0.6 s to 216 min.
