determine identification using the leaf characteristics: leaf apexes and bases (heart shaped, rounded, tapered), leaf margins (serrated, lobed), leaf textures (hairy, smooth, thick, thin, rough, waxy), leaf structure (simple, compound) and leaf arrangements (opposite, alternate, whorled).
Examining the leaves is probably the most common way to identify trees, because leaves can be very distinctive from species to species. While investigating a leaf, determine if the leaf is simple or compound.
