Gross Anatomy. In each hemithorax, the visceral pleura is a continuous surface that completely envelops the entire lung, including the fis-sures. At the pulmonary hilum, it continues on as the parietal pleura to line the mediastinum, chest wall, diaphragm, and cupola of the chest cavity.
The right and left pleural cavities are completely separated from each other with the mediastinum and the pericardial cavity between them. The dome, or cupola, of the pleural cavity extends above the first rib for 2 to 3 cm along the medial one third of the clavicle behind the sternocleidomastoid muscles.
The pleura consists of two layers, an inner visceral and an outer parietal layer. Both layers form a closed sac called the pleural cavity, which contains serous fluid. Due to the position of the heart, the left pleural cavity is smaller than the right.
