Focusing on the three most critical classes of actors that shape or inhabit legislative assemblies, we develop three ideal-typical models of legislative assemblies: the members’ assembly, the leaders’ assembly, and the voters’ assembly.
We identify the essential empirical features that we expect each ideal type to exhibit and use these to assess the fit between our theory and typologies on the one hand and real-world assemblies on the other. To do this, the chapter constructs an index for each ideal type of legislative assemblies.
