Lewis Howard Latimer (September 4, 1848 – December 11, 1928) was an American inventor and patent draftsman. His inventions included an evaporative air conditioner, an improved process for manufacturing carbon filaments for light bulbs, and an improved toilet system for railroad cars.

Lewis Howard Latimer developed improvements to the telephone, invented a method to manufacture carbon filament to make lightbulbs mass-producible, and developed an early version of the air conditioner – among other inventions.
It’s easy to attribute creations like the telephone or the light bulb to a lone-inventor working in isolation, suddenly getting that “Eureka!” moment, emerging with a device only a genius could conceive.
Lewis Latimer (1848-1928) was an expert draftsman who joined Thomas Edison’s lab in 1884. He was also a skilled inventor and designed several improvements for light bulbs.

Safer than gas lamps, and less harsh than arc lights, incandescent bulbs transformed the average American home after nightfall. Despite the societal roadblocks a black man faced in the late 19th century, Latimer successfully oversaw the setup of electric lighting plants in the United States, Canada and England.
