Oak Island’s Visible Historic Shipwreck. The Civil War Blockade Runner “Bendigo” can be seen at low tide off of Oak island’s “The Point” which is the Westernmost edge of the island. The Bendigo rests in the shallows, off shore, just East of the main channel of the Lockwoods Folly Inlet.

The wreck is normally submerged but when Garlington, of Fayetteville, N.C. flew his drone over the Lockwood Folly Inlet, located in between Holden Beach and Oak Island last week, the tide was lower than usual because of the full moon.

The boat is next to two Civil War wrecks. recent dredging by the Army Corps of Engineers has made it more difficult to find the boat, but parts are visible at low tide.
It ran aground west of the entrance to Lockwood's Folly Inlet on January 2-3, 1864, when the pilot saw the wreck of the Elizabeth and thought it was a Union blockader. After it was set afire by local Confederates, it was found by the U.S.S. Fahkee on January 4th, who were unable to refloat the blockade runner.
