Summer adults are regally patterned in black and white. In winter, they are plain gray above and white below, and you’ll find them close to shore on most seacoasts and a good many inland reservoirs and lakes. Common Loons are powerful, agile divers that catch small fish in fast underwater chases.

Common Loons are one of my FAVORITE water birds in California. These gorgeous birds are strong and fast swimmers who catch fish in high-speed underwater chases. They have even adapted solid bones (most bird bones are hollow), which makes it easier to dive since they are less buoyant.
14 Μαρ 2000 · The Loons — which English speakers in the Old World call "Divers" — are a small and ancient group of aquatic birds. They are specialized fish eaters with dagger-like bills that spend most of their time in water. They have lobed feet set so far back on the body that they are very clumsy on land.
In North America, this species is most concentrated in winter along the South Carolina coast, around Vancouver Island, in northern California, along the Gulf Coast adjacent to the Florida panhandle, and along the Atlantic seaboard from Massachusetts to Maine (Root 1988).
Beach is the Pacific Loon’s prime habitat in San Diego County, used by as many as 679 on 18 December 1976 and 421 on 20 December 1997 (D. W. Povey). The num-bers in this area vary greatly, however: in spite of Povey’s consistent coverage of it on San Diego Christmas bird counts 1975–2002, the figures for the Pacific Loon on the
Breeding Pacific Loons are dapper birds with soft gray heads and intricate black-and-white patterning on the back and neck. They nest on tundra lakes, where their far-carrying wails lend a haunting sound to the Arctic landscape.
25 Μαΐ 2017 · Common Loons (Gavia immer) visit coastal California during the non-breeding winter season. As it would happen, loons are generally silent during this time of year, and cry their eerily beautiful and plaintive song primarily during the breeding season (i.e. when they're not in California).
