If the contract is 1 year (or has 1 year remaining), then the Cap Penalty will be X for the current season only. If the contract is 2 years (or has 2 years remaining), then the Cap Penalty will be X split between the current season and next season.

if you go to the franchise users tab, you can click on yourself and clear your cap penalties. this frees up dead cap you traded away or released. it might not show up until you make another move or advance a week. you can edit players and just add a year to their contracts.
