Woodchucks, also called groundhogs or whistle pigs, are herbivores that will eat legumes, vegetables, berries and other fruit, and fresh produce—to the frustration of many gardeners. They will also chew on trees to sharpen teeth and mark territories.
We surveyed Maine residents to learn more about the methods they use to manage woodchucks, both successfully and unsuccessfully. Most respondents lived in rural areas (77%) on more than one acre of land (77%).

Woodchucks’ social habits may have changed over millennia, depending on the availability of good habitat. Today, human changes to the landscape may be forcing them into greater sociality. Mother woodchucks sometimes suppress reproduction in their female young by stressing them (e.g. chasing them, displacing them from food and sleep)!
