Reports on violence against women in public spaces are prevalent. In a recent survey conducted in Sydney, Australia, reveals that 60 % of women respondents pinned locations of ‘bad experience’ on the streets and 20 % of them on public transport (Committee for Sydney, 2019).

Issues relating to safety and security within urban spaces and metropolitan cities are an ongoing debate, and over the past few years, the CCTV has emerged as a means to tackle the ‘threats’ in city spaces.
In this essay, I paint a portrait of women in public places and their concerns with crime on a survey of the literature and in-depth interviews with women.
1 Οκτ 2021 · We examine the impact of three urban design interventions on people’s perception of safety in the public space. Photo simulation is used in a randomised control trial setting. Safety-enhancing design interventions have a significant impact on enhancing perceived safety.
Women’s perception of safety – as opposed to their risk of experiencing gendered violence or crime – very much determines how they interact with public space. This issue of perception makes measuring and evaluating women’s experiences difficult.
