Following ICD-10 guidelines, a patient with HIV status without symptoms is coded with Z21, positive HIV status. Some doctors and non-physician practitioners would prefer to use B20.
In this narrative review, we describe literature regarding alcohol’s impact on transmission, care, co-infections and comorbidities that are common among people living with HIV (PLWH), as well as literature regarding interventions to address alcohol use and its influences among PLWH.

The standard approach to primary care is the same for patients with and without HIV, whether care is delivered by a specialist or internist; however, there are unique considerations for patients with HIV, including treatment of HIV itself.
HIV doesn’t seem to cause cancer directly, but over time it causes the immune system to become weaker, putting people living with HIV (PLWH) at an increased risk of many types of cancer. In addition, PLWH who are diagnosed with cancer are more likely to die from that cancer than people without HIV.
