17 Σεπ 2020 · There is an easy loop around the lake that offers sweeping views and several access points to Hiwassee Lake as well as one to Apalachia Lake near Hiwassee Dam. The trip takes roughly 2 and a half hours depending on how often and how long one wants to stop.
Hiwassee Lake is a man-made reservoir in Cherokee County, North Carolina. It lies along the Hiwassee River created by the Hiwassee Dam which finished construction in 1940. Hiwassee Lake stretches along the river for approximately 22 miles (35 km) to the town of Murphy, North Carolina.
Lake Hiwassee is surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest, and offers spectacular scenery. Lake Hiwassee is primarily fed by the Hiwassee, Nottely, and Valley rivers. The lake covers 6,090 acres with almost 180 miles of shoreline; it measures 22 miles long and more than 200 feet deep in places.
