9 Σεπ 2024 · Battle of Okinawa (April 1–June 21, 1945), World War II battle fought between U.S. and Japanese forces on Okinawa, the largest of the Ryukyu Islands. The capture of Okinawa was seen as a precursor to an invasion of the Japanese home islands.
Island Warfare. In the Pacific Ocean, U.S. troops captured island after island from the Japanese. In February 1943, after six months of jungle warfare, U.S. forces drove the Japanese from Guadalcanal, one of the Solomon Islands. The United States captured Saipan in the Mariana Islands in July 1944. From Saipan, U.S. airplanes began bombing Japan.
